TANNERIES OF JAJMAU & WASTE WATER TREATMENT PLANT IN KANPUR

The JAJMAU area of Kanpur has a aboundence of tannery industry. The waste produced & processed & contaminated water from all of these are poured directly into the river. To prevent this hazardous pollution & protect rivers specially GANGA this treatment plant has been established. But plant is working under capacity at an efficiency of around 65%. This is due to lack of  funds available for operational and management costs.  the wastewater is  highly corrosive and damage iron bolts and pipes. As per the directive of Supreme Court, the tanners and the Kanpur Nagar Nigam (KNN) are supposed to share the operation and management costs of the plant on 50:50 bases. Both have diverted from their commitments. It is the responsibility of  tanners to remove chromium from their effluent. It is favourable to remove chrome at the source because it is easier and beneficial from the tanner‟s point of view since they can convert the hexavalent chrome to trivalent chrome and recover it to save his cost on raw material. But their ignorance has not only elevated problems for them but also created problems for the environment.
System, pollution control board & government should pay attention regarding such types of problems. They should provide proper fund, assessments & maintinence for such kinds of ecofriendly & nature savers projects. Because ultimately we or our generation will pay & punished for this careless behavior.
